Monday – June -09/2014, Author Stephen Helmes
Stephen Helmes : What the Hell Happened to Me
I never thought of myself as a writer. I never thought I would enjoy it the way that I do today. Like that little boy, Mikey, in the old cereal commercials, I tried it, and as soon as the flavor hit me, I started gobbling it down.
HOUSE OF FLIES
When I was in the third grade, our teacher, Miss Phillips, asked the class what they wanted to be when they grew up. I pondered on all the choices as the other kids spilled their colorful answers of doctors, nurses, firemen, truck drivers, and police officers. It was a question that I hadn’t taken to heart at that point of my life, so I had to come up with an answer quick, before the question’s fuse burned down to me.
The blond boy sitting in the row to my left, about three seats behind me answered, “I want to be a rock star.”
At that point, all the other ideas faded and went to Answer Heaven. I instantly saw myself standing under bright lights, hair over my shoulders, a guitar in my hands and screaming girls at my feet. If someone looked over at my desk at that moment, I bet I was grinning like a pumpkin.
When the fuse burned down to me I shouted, “I want to be a rock star too!”
There were no cheers, no woo-hoo’s and no one turned to asked me for an autograph. The kid behind me gave his answer, and the world continued to turn without a glitch or even a tingle from my fabulous discovery. That didn’t matter though. I knew from that moment what I wanted and the seed, as well as my hair, started to grow.
I started playing guitar when I was ten and didn’t play my first live show with a rock band until I was twenty-one and old enough to get into the club.
The first show was terrible. My amp wasn’t grounded properly and every time I got within two inches of the mike, a blue spark would shoot out and connect with my upper lip. After the first song, my lips were numb, my face was tingling, and my vocals came out sounding like Buckwheat. Our rhythm guitarist was nervous and drank himself into a new comfort zone before we hit the stage, so he was missing notes and occasionally moving his guitar too close to the straight microphone stand, creating an out of tune slide effect. At the end of our set, the announcer walked onto stage and said to the stunned crowd, “Well, let’s give ’em a hand anyway.”
In 1993, I met drummer Connie Caldwell. Together, we created the band we are still proud to be a part of today, House of Flies. I could not begin to tell you how many shows we have played in the last two decades; hundreds easily, maybe a thousand, I don’t know. We have played shows where only two people showed and we have played theaters with hundreds of seats filled and the audience chanting. House of Flies have a cameo appearance in the horror film, Chainsaw Cheerleaders. we have played live for the show Star Search and won a recording deal and television appearance.
Even though our band is not known worldwide, and I never expect to hear our names mentioned in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, I consider our little rock group very successful.
THE BEGINNING OF WRITING
The band has been the center of my attention for the past twenty-one years, but in 2001 another piece of my personal puzzle entered into the equation. It was a cold winter’s night, a work night for me. My normal routine was to get up at five-thirty in the morning and start getting ready for the long day that awaited me. This particular morning I had no need for an alarm clock. I woke at 5:00 am in a cool bedroom, sweating and scared senseless, with my eyes darting around the dark room.
In the dream, I had been walking through a city park on an extremely cold night. I’m not sure what time it was, but the big city was completely deserted, no one around except me.
I saw a big fountain in the center of the park. On any normal day, perhaps a warm, sunny spring afternoon, this fountain would be beautiful, water flowing from its overfilled, giant-cup-formed top to its wide round pool at the bottom, where people might sit around its concrete base and look at the water, or even toss a penny for a wish. But this night, there were no spring flowers and no sunshine, only the dim glow of yellow street lamps shining down on the frozen water of the fountain. But there was something else, something unusual that drew me in for a closer look.
Draped over the side of the pool, I saw a bright red jacket that someone apparently had left by accident. I walked over for a closer look and that’s when I saw something else. Under the clear, thick ice, there was the body of a black man, wearing what I could barely make out to be a football jersey with large white numbers. He was buried under the ice! Then I saw another body next to his, an old woman, then another, and another. This fountain’s pool was filled with bodies, twenty, thirty, or more, like frozen fish in a bucket! That’s when I felt its presence. I can’t tell you what it was. I looked around and saw nothing but the surrounding trees and the lonely yellowish glow of the sidewalk under the street lamps. But there was something very real and very evil. I could feel it approaching, getting closer and closer.
I started running. From what, I still didn’t know, but it was right behind me. I could feel it gaining on me. I could feel the hot breath breathing down my back as I ran fast as I could to the distant, crowded lobby of a nearby hotel.
The dream brought me up in the sweat soaked sheets like a clown popping up at the end of Pop Goes the Weasel.
That nightmare put me on track to where I am today. I wrote the dream down while it was still fresh in my mind and gradually added to it. Today that nightmare is the first story in my book, Nightly Visits, and it’s called Glasswalker.
Being a horror fan from a very young age, I found myself enjoying this new found hobby as much as I enjoyed playing music but in a totally different way.
I had other nightmares, and odd dreams, and made it a habit of writing them all down when I woke so they wouldn’t be forgotten.
I didn’t know what would happen to these stories. I hadn’t planned to publish them because I didn’t think I was good enough for that.
I knew that I loved Stephen King movies, but I had never been the reading type.
thebookwormery.wordpress.com
MY BIGGEST WRITING INFLUENCE
One afternoon while I was skimming through a bookstore, I found a book by Stephen King, that I had never heard of. The book was called The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon. Out of curiosity, I bought the book and read it. I fell in love with this book. Reading this book made me want to write more and more.
I loved the way King worded the story as well. One reason I didn’t consider myself a good writer was because I had read stories that, if a person had just an average vocabulary like mine, they found it hard to understand. King worded his book well, but one didn’t have to have college reading skills to enjoy it.
I began reading Desperation, Bag of Bones, The Shining, The Rage, and so many more of his books. I was hooked.
So here I am today. I’m proud to say that my first book, Nightly Visits, is published and available online around the world, and my second book is under construction right now.
My first magazine review, from InD”Tale Magazine gave Nightly Visits a four-star rating and compared my writing to Stephen King. I wonder why.

Sunday – June -15/2014, Author Christina M. Castro
I have been writing poetry since the fifth grade ever since I got my first guitar and learned how to play it so naturally. In the eighth grade, I was given an assignment to write a children’s story to present to the first grade of the private all girl’s school that I attended in Towson MD. I became hooked onto writing with the lifetime goal to be published. I continued to write poetry all through my years of high school. College and when I attended nursing school.
In the year 2000, I started praying about getting published and recorded for my original songs. In 2008, I graduated from Harvest Time Bible College in Randallstown MD with a Bachelor’s Degree in Theology with a certification as a Missionary. To become a published Christian writer is my new goal in writing.
In 2010, I joined Hubpages and Facebook where I have met other wonderful writers. One of the most wonderful writers I have met is Deborah Brooks Langford. She introduced me to Barry Mowles, from Cardiff, Wales UK and he made it possible to publish through Destiny To Write Publications my first two books of poetry called, Hopes, Dreams & Spiritual Fulfillment and Words From A Missionary’s Heart. These books are for purchase through Lulu.com. Currently I am in the process of writing my third poetry book, called Confronting Deception and my first novel, called Living Through The Metamorphosis. Later this year, I will be publishing my first Children’s Adventure Book.
I am a licensed practical nurse doing Private Duty full-time, and a mother of two, my daughter is 26, in her last year of Art College studying Interior Design, and my son is 23, who is in Community College doing his prerequisites for Pharmacy School. Being divorced has not been a misfortunate experience. It gives me incentive to be creative and to spend more time with my parents in their retirement years. But nothing could be possible without Jesus Christ as my Savior and the Power in all my possibilities. To the Lord God Almighty, I am totally thankful.

Thursday – June -19/2014, Author Uvi Poznansky

Uvi Poznansky is a California-based author, poet and artist.
She earned her B. A. in Architecture and Town Planning from the Technion in Haifa, Israel. During her studies and in the years immediately following her graduation, she practiced with an innovative Architectural firm, taking a major part in the large-scale project, ‘Home for the Soldier’; a controversial design that sparked fierce public debate.
At the age of 25 Uvi moved to Troy, N.Y. with her husband and two children. Before long, she received a Fellowship grant and a Teaching Assistantship from the Architecture department at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where she guided teams in a variety of design projects; and where she earned her M.A. in Architecture. Then, taking a sharp turn in her education, she earned her M.S. degree in Computer Science from the University of Michigan.
During the years she spent in advancing her career–first as an architect, and later as a software engineer, software team leader, software manager and a software consultant (with an emphasis on user interface for medical instruments devices)–she wrote and painted constantly, and exhibited in Israel and California. In addition, she taught art appreciation classes. Her versatile body of work can be seen online at uviart.com. It includes bronze and ceramic sculptures, oil and watercolor paintings, charcoal, pen and pencil drawings, and mixed media.
Uvi published two children books, Jess and Wiggle and Now I Am Paper. For each one of these books, she created an animation video (see Author Videos at the bottom of this page.)
She won great acclaim for her novel, Apart From Love, and for her poetry book, Home. Her collection of dark tales, Twisted, and her Historical Fiction books, A Favorite Son and Rise to Power will soon be followed by a new novel, A Peek at Bathsheba.

A FAVORITE SON:
APART FROM LOVE:
My name is Ann Marie Zagorianos. I was born in Alexandria, Egypt and grew up in the Sudan. I come from Rhodes in Hellas, where I live.
I teach English. I love children and I know they love me, too. If only we, adults could listen to what they have to say, I am sure life would have been a lot better. I fight hard to retain the child in me.
I love all people regardless of nationality, color, political views or religion. United we can change the world to the better. Life is short, why should we waste it on pointless conflicts?
Writing poems, stories, articles , reading books, listening to music, editing and producing videos or taking photos and making photo creations, excite my interest and add color to my life.
I have published three poetry books in Greek. My poems have been translated in French ( by Author – Poet Gaston Henry Aufrere ) , in Italian ( by Constantino Nikas ) , in German ( by Beucker ) , in Portuguese ( by Virginia Rodas ) and are included in various anthologies all over the world. I have also participated in photography exhibitions with my photos and photocreations. I am a dreamer rather than a realist

When I was ten a drunken guy almost drowned me in a swimming pool. It was in Miami Beach at the Chateau motel. The guy was a pool hand and he was wrestling (playfully, for the most part)with us kids. Then he said, “I’m going to show you a good hold” and he got me in a headlock and took me under. It was a good hold all right. He held me there and held me there and held me there. I struggled but this was a powerful man. There was nothing to do. I would either die or I wouldn’t.
That experience gave me an appreciation for life’s tenuousness. If you think about it, we’re only alive as far as our next breath will take us.
So I write novels and stories about characters like you and me with their heads underwater. (Figuratively speaking of course.) Characters under so much duress their brains are about to burst. They’re at the end of it all. No way out of this one. But I also write with a sense of humor. (You have to have a sense of humor, right?)
I was born in 1956 in Chicago. A lifelong Illinois guy. Married once. Divorced. No kids. No pets. Passionate about things: people, classical music, golf. And I always seem to be on the side of the underdog.

Monday – August 25, 2014 – Author Kristy Black
I grew up in Southern California and graduated from West Lake High School (“Go Warriors!”). Then I moved north to San Jose where I attended college at San Jose State University (“Go Spartans!”). After graduating, which seemed to take forever… I moved to the Big Island of Hawaii for a year. While living in Hawaii I worked a little and played a lot. It was here that I fell in love with the breathtaking island as well as the beautiful Hawaiian culture, which proved to be the inspiration for the main character, Sofia Hanalei, and the island setting at the beginning of my story, MAGISTAN. While in Hawaii, I experienced a condition called, “Island Fever,” which made me feel I needed to get back to the mainland – quick.
I moved to another place I love, the Santa Cruz mountains. While living in these mountains among the Redwood trees, I wrote MAGISTAN. It was this strange Redwood forest that inspired me to create the setting for the Blue Bark forest in my story. Feeling life was passing me by living a secluded mountain life, my husband and I recently moved back to LA. Although, I miss both Santa Cruz and Hawaii, living in LA is a lot fun! My dream is to continue writing the MAGISTAN series and someday move back to the Hawaiian Islands, my favorite place in the whole wide world!

My name is Susan Joyner-Stumpf. I have been writing since the age of eight. It started off as an escape mechanism for me, as I was suffering from Childhood abuse. After a while, and after winning every Creative Writing Contest I entered at such an early age, I began to have a passion for writing and thus have never stopped.
I am considered a Dark Poet. Though I also write both Fiction and Non-Fiction Short Stories, Novellas (shorter than novels, longer than short stories) and songs, I am most focused as a Poet. My poems are an immediate rush of expression, an inner need to connect and to begin myself, and end the constant longing. It is a funnel through which all things eventually flow outwards, the essence that is me thrown to the masses. I write because I am this thing that must create, or so shall I be destroyed. I blow into this world my latest gesture, a kiss of meter and rhyme and metaphor, expecting nothing in return. Perhaps an echo, a sigh. What would be nice is someone to turn around and say, I needed every bit of that. My life would thus be complete.
Again, I have been writing since the age of eight, over 40 years. It’s been a life-long journey of pleasure and pain into that great Unknown. But it’s enough. I’m one with it. I can only hope I’ve helped you find oneness too in this world of bits and pieces.

“She has weathered more storms than most people have that I have ever known. Yet, she still perseveres and conquers her fears, never letting an ounce of weakness tell her that she cannot do something… Because she knows that she can. Most of the struggles that I have seen, suffering along side with her frequently as she has fallen down only to pick herself up. “Hear” I am!! Is like poetry to the poet as medicine is to the patient. Every reader will relate to something somewhere in the book. Each time it is read, it will even relate to the same person differently as they progress through various challenges in their life. I wish Jen many years of continued success in her relationships, employment, overcoming obstacles with her health and wellness, financial security, and in her continuation to showing others that there is always hope.”
P.S. College graduate in New Jersey

Monday – 22nd Dec/2014 – Musician Mihran Kalaydjian
“Mihran Kalaydjian “Mino” known as “Fast Finger” is a special breed, and I mean that in the most complimentary sense of the phrase. He has it all – the whole package of artistic gifts – and in abundance. But, what strikes about his playing is the sheer beauty – the concept, the intelligence, the control over every sound, the vision, the phenomenal listening to it all – all the attributes that comprise great artistry of the sort that touches our souls.”
